Short Story

MPD150 is a community-based initiative challenging the narrative that police exist to protect and serve. By researching the Minneapolis Police Department’s history, reviewing current practices, and mapping responsible alternatives, we are committed to pursuing a police-free world.

MPD150 is a group of community members working to shift the discussion of police violence in Minneapolis from one of procedural reforms to one of meaningful, structural change. 2017 marks 150 years since the founding of the Minneapolis Police Department in 1867, and this anniversary provides us with a unique opportunity to carry out a community-based performance review of its fifteen decades of existence and decide, as a community, what we can do differently– for the sake of our families, our neighbors, and ourselves.

To that end, we will present a practical, responsible pathway for the dismantling of the Minneapolis Police Department: the transference of its social service functions to community-based agencies and organizations, the replacement of its emergency intervention functions with non-paramilitary models, and the redirection of its resources in ways that support community resilience and people-directed development. Your support will allow us to not only do some of the practical organizing that it takes to put this plan into motion, but the crucial culture work side of this as well– because we’re not just trying to shift policy; we’re trying to fundamentally change the narrative. MPD150 respects that ours is one effort and one approach among many.

We received a $5,000 matching grant for this project, meaning that if we meet this fundraiser’s target amount, our funds will be doubled to $10,000.

Funding this campaign will provide money for:
  • a police abolition tool kit
  • our community-based policing report
  • organizational expenses (printing costs, space reservations for meetings, etc)
  • launching art initiatives
